Amanvari Case Unfolds: Fraud and Kidnapping Allegations in Los Cabos

On January 16, Cuauhtémoc Édgar Velázquez Fierro, a prominent hotel operator and senior partner of DGU Baja, may be formally charged by a judge in Baja California Sur. The case revolves around allegations of fraud totaling 24 million pesos tied to the construction of the luxury Amanvari hotel in Los Cabos.

What Sparked the Allegations?
The accusations began when DGU Baja, a company formed by DOTTOR GROUP MEXICO and TERRA PLANA, failed to pay subcontractor Mármol y Granito (MYG) for its work on the Amanvari project.

From Unpaid Bills to Alleged Kidnapping
The situation escalated dramatically when MYG’s legal representative and a notary public, seeking payment, were allegedly kidnapped. A complaint (LRB/064/2022) was initially dismissed by Judge José Humberto Zavala Calderón, raising concerns about potential corruption.

Appeals Lead to Reversal
Judge Paul Razo Brooks later overturned the dismissal in case 208/2024, binding Alessio and Pietro Dottor—partners of Velázquez Fierro—to trial for unlawful deprivation of liberty. The court also imposed travel restrictions on the accused to prevent them from leaving the country.

Financial Fallout and Additional Legal Battles
The case has extended into the commercial sector. In case 100/2024, the First Civil Court of Cabo San Lucas ordered the freezing of DGU Baja’s bank accounts. Attempts by the company to lift the freeze through legal appeals were rejected.

Corruption Under Investigation

Judge Zavala Calderón’s handling of the case is now under review, sparking questions about possible misconduct. The scrutiny has drawn widespread public and legal attention.

What’s Next?
The upcoming hearing on January 16 is expected to be a turning point in this high-profile case. With allegations of fraud, kidnapping, and potential judicial corruption, the outcome could set a significant legal precedent in Baja California Sur.
