Deadly Crash in San José del Cabo Leaves Two Dead, Six Injured

SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, Mexico — A violent car crash in the early hours of Sunday left two people dead and six others injured — two of them in critical condition — along the busy Transpeninsular Highway in San José del Cabo.

The accident

Shortly before 3 a.m., a black 2007 Dodge Dakota pickup truck traveling from San José del Cabo toward Cabo San Lucas lost control as it entered the curve known locally as the “Y Griega.”

A video circulating on social media shows the truck speeding before it jumped the center divider and slammed into a white 2011 Dodge Attitude sedan headed in the opposite direction toward Los Cabos International Airport.

The force of the crash destroyed both vehicles, leaving several passengers trapped inside. Drivers passing by quickly dialed 911, triggering a rapid response from first responders.

Emergency response

Firefighters from San José del Cabo, Red Cross paramedics and private clinic staff from Saint Luke’s rushed to the scene. Using the “jaws of life,” firefighters pried open the mangled cars to free the victims.

Paramedics stabilized the injured before transporting them to area hospitals. Despite their efforts, two victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the official fire department report, units from Stations #1 Centro and #3 San José Viejo were activated at 4:20 a.m., deploying engines M-15, M-71, B-02, C-1 and A-617. In total, four people were transported for treatment, two others left the scene on their own though injured, and two victims were declared dead.

Investigation and charges

The National Guard is conducting the accident investigation. Authorities confirmed the driver of the Dodge Dakota was taken into custody as the suspected responsible party and placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, facing a potential charge of vehicular manslaughter.

Officials identified the vehicles as a Dodge Dakota pickup with plates ZMT-556 and a Dodge Attitude sedan with plates DAK-4006.

Community impact

The crash happened near Farmacias Dorada’s in the 5 de Febrero neighborhood, a stretch of road well known to local residents. The deaths and injuries have sent shockwaves through the community of San José del Cabo, where residents say the tragedy is yet another reminder of the dangers of speeding on one of the municipality’s most traveled highways.
