U.S. Investigators Suspect China in Cyber Intrusion Targeting FBI Network

According to a report published by and written by , U.S. investigators believe hackers linked to the government of may be responsible for a cyber intrusion into an internal computer network of the (FBI).

The compromised system reportedly stores information associated with certain domestic surveillance orders. Sources familiar with the investigation indicated that the network accessed by the attackers was an unclassified system containing sensitive data related to communications and internet activity of individuals under surveillance. The information includes records such as incoming and outgoing call data, IP addresses, web addresses, and routing information, although it does not contain the actual content of communications.

Officials emphasized that the scope and severity of the breach remain unclear, and the investigation is still in its early stages. Preliminary assessments could change as authorities continue to analyze the incident. Lawmakers in the U.S. Congress were recently notified that the FBI began investigating the suspected intrusion last month.

In a statement cited by the report, the FBI said it had identified suspicious activity within its networks and deployed its technical capabilities to address the issue. Meanwhile, representatives of the Chinese government did not immediately respond to requests for comment. China has historically denied Western accusations of cyberattacks on government and corporate systems and has previously accused the United States of conducting aggressive cyber operations.

The report notes that if confirmed, the incident would represent another example of alleged cyber operations linked to Beijing targeting sensitive law-enforcement infrastructure in the United States.
