The National Seismological Service reported a magnitude 3.3 quake Friday afternoon, with an epicenter just southwest of the city
SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, Mexico — A new earthquake shook San José del Cabo on Friday afternoon, prompting a wave of reports from residents across the city and renewing public concern after several noticeable tremors were felt in Los Cabos this week.
According to Mexico’s National Seismological Service, the quake had a magnitude of 3.3 and was recorded at 1:16:57 p.m. local time. The epicenter was located about 3 kilometers southwest of San José del Cabo, at a depth of 11.4 kilometers.
Although the earthquake was considered moderate, it was widely felt because of its proximity to the urban area. Residents in several neighborhoods quickly reported the shaking on social media. Some accounts indicated the movement was also felt as far as Cabo del Sol, near Cabo San Lucas.
The recent seismic activity has drawn attention because, despite the relatively low magnitudes, the tremors have been clearly felt at the surface.
Francisco Cota Márquez, director of Municipal Civil Protection, said earlier quakes recorded Wednesday and Thursday caused minor cracks at a child care center in San José del Cabo. Officials did not identify the facility, but Civil Protection personnel inspected the site to assess the damage, which was initially described as minor.
Authorities said they will continue monitoring seismic activity in the area and asked the public to stay informed through official channels, including Civil Protection and the National Seismological Service.
Municipal officials also urged residents not to spread unverified reports or information without scientific backing, warning that false or exaggerated claims can create unnecessary fear.
Civil Protection recommended that families review their emergency plans, identify safe areas at home and work, and report any visible structural damage that could pose a risk.
