Hurricane Season Alert: Stronger Storms Could Hit the Pacific Later This Year

Federal authorities in Mexico are warning coastal states to prepare for a potentially unusual hurricane season, especially in the Pacific Ocean, where storms could become more intense toward the end of the year.

According to the information reported, specialists are expecting atypical weather conditions linked to El Niño, which may influence rainfall patterns, tropical storms, cyclones and hurricanes. Because of this, the federal government has already notified coastal states to strengthen their prevention and emergency response plans.

More monitoring in the Pacific

One of the key measures is the deployment of a specialized network of weather-monitoring buoys in Pacific waters. These buoys are intended to improve the observation of tropical systems, helping authorities better track the formation, strength and movement of cyclones and hurricanes.

This is especially important because the Pacific has less meteorological monitoring coverage compared to the Gulf of Mexico, where the United States has much of its storm-tracking infrastructure.

Civil Protection steps up prevention

Mexico’s National Civil Protection Coordination also announced the installation of command posts in 17 coastal states. These centers will help coordinate federal, state and municipal authorities, as well as civil society groups, during the rainy season and tropical cyclone threats.

The goal is clear: improve prevention, strengthen emergency coordination and respond faster if communities are affected by severe weather.

Why this matters

Stronger hurricanes can bring dangerous winds, flooding, landslides, power outages, damage to roads, homes, boats, businesses and critical services. For coastal regions like Baja California Sur, hurricane preparedness is not optional — it is essential.

Authorities are urging residents to stay informed through official channels, review emergency plans, secure homes and patios, protect important documents, identify shelters and avoid waiting until the storm is already near.

The warning is on the table: the strongest part of hurricane season may still be ahead. Preparation starts now.
