According to an Associated Press report, Lorenzo woke up before dawn every morning, picked up his construction crew, and drove them to job sites across the Houston area. For roughly 35 years, he helped build hundreds of homes while creating a stable life for his family and supporting his children’s education.
But one ordinary workday ended in tragedy.
Lorenzo was reportedly pursued by federal immigration agents driving unmarked vehicles while he was taking his crew to a construction site. During the operation, an ICE officer fired into his white van, fatally wounding him.
Immigration authorities claimed the officer acted in self-defense because Lorenzo allegedly tried to ram an ICE vehicle. However, the report states that officials had not publicly released evidence supporting that version of events.
His family and their attorneys strongly dispute the government’s account. The men riding with Lorenzo said the bullet came through the passenger-side window and that the officer was not standing directly in front of the van or in immediate danger.
The case has raised even more questions because the agents at the scene were reportedly not wearing body cameras, and no complete video of the shooting had emerged.
Another disturbing detail is that federal agents were apparently looking for someone else when Lorenzo was killed.
His son Ronaldo said his father may have panicked when he noticed unidentified vehicles following him. Lorenzo could have believed that criminals were trying to steal his van, his tools, or harm his workers.
The family also said Lorenzo had been trying to regularize his immigration status and was close to obtaining legal work authorization.
Lorenzo had lived in the United States for more than 30 years. He settled in Houston with his wife and raised three children, always placing education at the center of their home. One of his sons became an engineer, another is studying engineering, and his oldest son works as a teacher.
Friends and neighbors described Lorenzo as kind, quiet, responsible, and deeply committed to his family. Even after long and exhausting workdays, he still made time to ask about his wife’s day and check on his sons.
His wife has been left inconsolable. During a community vigil, Lorenzo’s oldest son promised to continue fighting for answers and justice.
Democratic members of Congress representing the Houston area have called for an independent investigation. The shooting has renewed criticism of immigration operations involving unmarked vehicles, conflicting official accounts, and the lack of body-camera footage.
A wife lost her husband. Three sons lost their father. A community lost a hardworking neighbor. Lorenzo left home to earn an honest living and never returned. Now his family is demanding the full truth—and justice.
