Makhachev defends his belt with a decisive submission win over Poirier in the 5th round

In a tough fight that tested his skills, lightweight champion Islam Makhachev proved his status as the UFC's best fighter by defeating veteran Dustin Poirier with a submission in the fifth round. Despite controlling much of the fight on the ground, Makhachev faced challenges and even sustained a cut. However, he pulled through with a decisive win in the final round.

The fight started with Makhachev dominating, landing a punch, taking Poirier down, and controlling his back for most of the first round. It seemed like a quick win was in the cards, but Poirier showed his resilience and fought back in the second round. While Makhachev remained strong on the ground, Poirier defended well and even landed some significant strikes, keeping the fight close.

The crowd in Newark was roaring for Poirier, the underdog, and an upset victory seemed within reach if he could win the final round. However, Makhachev secured the win with a D'Arce choke, leaving Poirier unconscious or close to it on the canvas.
