First responders and deputies responded to reports of a fatal train accident in San Diego Friday afternoon. It has been confirmed the victim was 17.

According to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, witnesses told deputies that three boys on their bicycles were stopped at the crossing arm to allow a northbound train to pass at around 12:30 p.m.

An investigation is underway after a deadly train collision in the City of San Diego.

It happened on Friday, June 14 around 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of Sorrento Valley Road and Sorrento Valley Boulevard in the Sorrento Valley area within the City of San Diego.

The Sheriff's Transit Enforcement Unit (TEU) investigates incidents along the routes of the routes of the North County Transit District (NCTD) which Amtrak uses. San Diego Police requested the Sheriff's TEU respond to conduct the investigation.

Witnesses told deputies three boys riding their bicycles were stopped at the crossing arms to allow a northbound train to pass. After the northbound train passed through, a 17-year-old boy crossed the tracks on his bike not realizing there was also a passing southbound train. The boy was struck by the train and did not survive his injuries. The two other bicyclists were not hurt.

It is the policy of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department not to release information about underage victims.

The Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene and will continue the investigation. The M.E. will make a positive identification of the teen, as well as determine cause and manner of death pending notification of his family.
