Massive Fire Engulfs Cabo San Lucas Landfill, Residents Warned of Health Risks

Since the early hours of Wednesday, a massive fire has broken out at the Cabo San Lucas landfill, posing a severe challenge for firefighters. Strong and unpredictable winds are complicating efforts to control the blaze, which continues to spread.

Thick smoke has engulfed nearby neighborhoods, prompting the municipal government of Los Cabos to issue an urgent alert. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures due to the health risks posed by inhaling smoke, which can significantly impact air quality.

Health Precautions Issued by Authorities
The Municipal Health Directorate has urged the public to follow these guidelines:

  • Stay indoors: Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering your home.
  • Monitor symptoms: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience respiratory issues like coughing, shortness of breath, or chest pain.
  • Limit outdoor activities: Avoid exercise or any outdoor activity until the air quality improves.
  • Protect vulnerable groups: Special attention should be given to children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating whether this fire, along with a similar incident at the San José del Cabo landfill, may be acts of sabotage. The suspicions arise following the municipal government’s recent decision to cancel the concession contracts with the companies managing these waste sites.

As the situation unfolds, the safety of residents remains the top priority. Stay tuned for updates on firefighting efforts and ongoing investigations.
