San José del Cabo was shaken Thursday afternoon as a massive column of smoke rose over the Estero area, signaling a fire that has kept emergency crews on high alert since 4:30 p.m. As firefighters race against time, strong winds have only added fuel to the fire—literally—making containment efforts even more difficult.
The inferno, with flames soaring up to 65 feet in five different spots, has given firefighters a run for their money. Despite the tough conditions, they’ve been working around the clock to keep the blaze from getting out of hand.
Earlier in the day, another fire sparked concerns when residents believed it was in the Estero. However, it was later confirmed to be a warehouse fire, which was tackled without damage to the protected area.
As nightfall settled in, firefighters remained on the ground, dousing every last ember to ensure the fire didn’t come roaring back. With nerves on edge, the community is keeping a watchful eye for any flare-ups.
