Thunderstorm in La Paz kills one after lightning strike brings down tree

La Paz, Mexico — A powerful thunderstorm that swept through the capital of Baja California Sur on Sunday afternoon left one person dead after lightning and strong winds battered rural areas outside the city.

Authorities said the incident occurred in El Quelele, a ranch near the coastline about 13 kilometers from the El Centenario–San Juan de la Costa highway. A salt pine tree, struck by lightning, toppled and trapped a person beneath it.

Volunteer firefighters from El Centenario Veterans Brigade, responding in unit 602, carried out rescue efforts at the scene. Despite their attempts, the victim was found without vital signs.

The storm brought heavy rainfall, intense lightning activity and gusty winds across the region. Local officials urged residents to take extra precautions during severe weather, particularly in rural and coastal zones where falling trees and lightning strikes pose heightened risks.
