Mexico to build first thermal-solar power plants in Baja California Sur

As part of a nationwide push to expand clean energy, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced plans to build two thermal-solar power plants with thermal storage in Baja California Sur — a first-of-its-kind project for the country.

Energy Secretary Luz Elena González said the facilities will be operated by the state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and are designed to provide a more reliable power supply in the isolated peninsula, relying on renewable energy produced on-site.

CFE Director General Emilio Calleja Alor explained that the initial phase includes two plants of 50 megawatts each, capable of running on solar power for up to 11 consecutive hours. The project will also be supported by so-called “battery ships” to help ensure round-the-clock electricity.

Site studies are already underway to determine the exact location. Construction is expected to take roughly four years, with operations slated to begin near the end of the current federal administration.

The investment totals $400 million, and Sheinbaum noted that the bidding process could kick off later this year or in early 2026.
