$65,000 Vanishes in Brazen Baja California ATM Heist

LA PAZ, Mexico — A man has been ordered to stand trial and will remain in custody in connection with a brazen armed robbery last year that ranks as one of the largest bank heists in Baja California Sur in recent times.

The suspect, identified by authorities only as Francisco Javier “N,” was allegedly one of two armed men who targeted an HSBC ATM inside the “Mi Plaza la Paz” shopping center on the morning of Sept. 25, 2024. Prosecutors say the duo used force to break into the machine and made off with approximately 1,092,950 Mexican pesos (about $65,000 USD).

Following an investigation, a judge granted the state’s request to formally charge the suspect. During a court hearing this past Friday, Sept. 5, the judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial and imposed preventive detention, meaning the suspect will be held in jail until the conclusion of the legal proceedings.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about organized crime targeting commercial areas in the state. The judicial order to keep the suspect behind bars is being framed by authorities as a firm step against impunity for high-impact crimes.
