CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – A prominent labor union in Baja California Sur is leveling severe allegations against the exclusive Diamante Golf Club, claiming the resort subjects its workers to "degrading" and "inhumane" conditions, including providing trash bags for protection from the rain instead of proper rain gear.
Labor Leader Condemns "Humiliating" Treatment
The accusations were brought forward by Linze Rodríguez, a representative from the CATEM union. Rodríguez stated that workers at the high-end club, which is slated to host an international tournament this November, are forced to use black plastic bags to shield themselves from the elements. He described the practice as a "humiliating" sign of disrespect for the workforce.
Workers Caught Between Natural Disasters and Inflexible Policies
The issue has been exacerbated by recent heavy rains, which have caused significant road damage and transportation chaos in Cabo San Lucas. Despite these challenges, the union claims the club is threatening to dock the pay of employees who are late, showing no leniency for weather-related delays. Many workers live in neighborhoods with poor infrastructure that are highly susceptible to landslides, making commutes dangerous and unpredictable.
Allegations of Grueling Conditions and a "Company Union"
The union's complaint extends beyond the rainy season. Rodríguez reported that workers face grueling shifts under the intense sun without adequate breaks or shade, leading to one employee allegedly fainting from heat exhaustion. Furthermore, the CATEM union alleges that the workers are represented by a "company union" – a term used in the U.S. for a union perceived as being too cozy with management – that fails to advocate for their rights.
Call for Government Action and Union Showdown
In response, Rodríguez is calling on Baja California Sur's Secretary of Labor to launch an immediate investigation into the club's labor practices. He vowed that the CATEM union would continue its fight for official representation rights. "We will not allow this," Rodríguez said. "We are demanding a union that truly represents the workers' interests, not a puppet union that does what management says."
The Bottom Line: The scandal presents a stark contrast between the glamorous image of a world-class golf destination and the grim working conditions alleged by its staff, setting the stage for a potential labor dispute just months before a major international event.
