San Ignacio reels from flooding as local officials assess damage

SAN IGNACIO, Baja California Sur — Mulegé Mayor Edith Aguilar Villavicencio toured storm-hit neighborhoods on Monday after heavy rains unleashed flooding and washed out stretches of the Transpeninsular Highway, cutting off parts of the small desert town.

Aguilar, joined by state leaders, municipal officials and members of Mexico’s armed forces, said crews are moving quickly to restore order and provide immediate relief. “We’re in the field with every institution, working to support families, ensure their safety and deliver fast, safe solutions to bring San Ignacio back to normal,” she said.

Highway authorities confirmed that the main north–south route suffered two breaks near San Ignacio, though a temporary bypass is now open to all vehicles. The road is a lifeline for this remote community, connecting it with Santa Rosalía and the rest of the peninsula.

To aid recovery, a relief center has been set up in Santa Rosalía’s central plaza, where residents have been donating food, water and supplies for families hardest hit by the flooding.

Among those joining the mayor on the ground were Celina Ramírez, the municipality’s secretary-general; Fidel González, director of civil protection; city council members Yessica López and Francisco Javier Arce; Gyselle Hernández, head of the local DIF family services agency; and San Ignacio’s municipal delegate, Efraín Lastra.

Aguilar urged residents to stay tuned to official alerts, warning that more rain is in the forecast. State Gov. Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío is expected to arrive later in the day to continue damage assessments and coordinate additional aid. Local officials stressed they remain on high alert to safeguard the community.
