Heads Up, Tourists: Think Twice Before Walking to Cabo's Famous Arch

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — Local officials in Cabo San Lucas are issuing a stark warning to residents and tourists alike: stay off the temporary sandbar that has recently emerged at the iconic El Arco, as the natural phenomenon poses a significant safety risk.

The town's Civil Protection agency urged the public to avoid walking to the famous landmark, a popular destination for boat tours, now that a strip of sand has temporarily connected it to the shore. While the rare event creates a unique photo opportunity, authorities stress that the open-ocean location is dangerously unpredictable.

An Unpredictable and Risky Phenomenon

Carlos Alberto León Avilés, the coordinator of Civil Protection, explained that the sandbar is the result of an unusually low tide in the area. He noted that these events are irregular and can occur for several days in a row or not reappear for over four years.

“It is an unpredictable natural event, conditioned by sea currents and weather conditions,” León stated.

Although the temporary beach is a fascinating sight, officials warn that venturing onto it is a high-stakes gamble. The area is exposed to strong currents, shifting waves, and rapidly changing tides that can create emergency situations in an instant.

“The recommendation is clear: do not walk to the beach, as there is a danger of accidents or drownings,” he warned.

A Coordinated Safety Effort

León confirmed that a coordinated effort is underway between Public Safety, the Fire Department, the Red Cross, the Mexican Navy, and federal maritime authorities to monitor the area and respond to any incidents.

The official concluded by reiterating the call for the public to follow authorities' instructions. He encouraged everyone to enjoy the view of this rare natural occurrence from a safe distance on the main shore, rather than risking their safety for a closer look.
