SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, Mexico – A swarm of more than 20 small earthquakes rattled the San José del Cabo area on Sunday, unsettling residents and producing a loud subterranean rumble during the strongest tremor.
The most significant quake, a magnitude 3.0, struck at 6:16 a.m. Pacific Time and was centered about four miles southwest of the city, near the Querencia Golf Course, according to Mexico's National Seismological Service. While no damage or injuries were immediately reported, that particular tremor was notable for a loud booming sound that accompanied the shaking.
Social media lit up with reports from residents feeling the shakes in neighborhoods from the downtown zona centro to Monte Real, Colinas San José, and Vista Hermosa.
The magnitude 3.0 event was the standout in a series of 21 total quakes recorded by the Seismological Service in the area by 4 p.m. Sunday.
The swarm included events as small as magnitude 1.2, with several other tremors, including a second 3.0-magnitude quake at a different time, also being recorded.
The agency defines its "verified" quakes as those that have been calculated and published by a seismogram analyst. All the listed events are considered official records.
