Volunteers Rally to Clean Up Cabo San Lucas' Main Beach After Storms

LOS CABOS, Mexico – A massive community cleanup was launched at El Médano Beach, the main tourist beach in Cabo San Lucas, after recent heavy rains funneled large amounts of trash, debris, plastics, tires, and timber down onto the sand from surrounding arroyos.

It is a recurring issue for storm channels in the area to wash down garbage from hillside neighborhoods during significant rainfall, an event that also overwhelmed and damaged drainage systems in the town's center. Crews are currently making repairs to the collapsed infrastructure.

Hundreds Heed the Call for "United for Our Beaches!"

In response, the Los Cabos City Council, aiming to bolster environmental education and community involvement, organized a cleanup and awareness event under the banner “United for Our Beaches!” The effort focused on the area known as 8 Cascadas and the affected El Médano Beach.

The initiative was spearheaded by the Municipal Coordination for the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) in collaboration with the Cabo San Lucas delegation. Over 300 people participated, including city staff, tourism industry workers, and members of the Mexican Navy.

Starting at 6:30 a.m., teams fanned out across designated sectors, led by volunteer captains who had previously taken part in neighborhood clean-up drives.

Officials Highlight a Shift from Cleanup to Cultural Change

Karina de la O Uribe, head of the local delegation, emphasized that the goal extended beyond just picking up trash. “The main objective goes beyond the physical cleaning,” she stated, calling on residents and businesses to keep the area's roads and beaches free of waste, underscoring that environmental care is a “shared responsibility.”

Rafael Guillermo Álvarez Munguía, the municipal coordinator for Zofemat, pointed to a positive trend, crediting ongoing prevention efforts. “We collected much less debris this time than last, thanks to the previous cleanup work in different zones of Cabo San Lucas,” he said, reaffirming the administration's commitment to sustainability.

The Los Cabos city government stated that these actions reinforce its dedication to environmental conservation and community participation, working toward a cleaner and more environmentally responsible municipality.
