Baja California Sur has formally established a State Film Advisory Council in a move designed to strengthen its Film Commission and position the region as a premier destination for national and international productions, tourism officials announced this week.
Maribel Collins, head of the state’s Ministry of Tourism and Economy (SETUE), said the newly installed council brings together representatives from all five municipalities, environmental agencies, academic institutions and members of the film industry. The body will work in coordination to develop public policies intended to streamline permitting, ensure environmental compliance and create a more business-friendly framework for filmmakers.
“The audiovisual industry represents a major opportunity for economic development in Baja California Sur,” Collins said. “Every production not only showcases the beauty of our landscapes to global audiences, it also creates jobs, strengthens local supply chains and fuels economic growth in our communities.”
Productions Generate $341.5 Million in Economic Impact Over Three Years
According to state officials, the Baja California Sur Film Commission (COFILM BCS) has supported 138 productions over the past three years, generating more than 341.5 million pesos — roughly tens of millions of U.S. dollars — in direct economic impact across the state.
The projects have provided work for local technicians, transportation providers, hospitality workers, caterers and a wide range of small businesses tied to tourism and the creative economy. Officials say that ripple effect has helped diversify income streams beyond traditional tourism sectors.
Among the most prominent recent productions filmed in the region are Lord of The Bros, American Jesus and Yellow, which have featured the state’s deserts, beaches and coastal communities as cinematic backdrops.
With the creation of the advisory council, state leaders say they are reinforcing their commitment to building a stable, transparent and sustainable production environment — one that balances economic opportunity with environmental stewardship while delivering tangible benefits to residents of Baja California Sur.
