SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, Mexico — A strong earthquake was felt across the urban area of San José del Cabo at 9:59 a.m. Monday, according to residents and official seismic data.
Mexico’s National Seismological Service reported that the quake registered a magnitude of 4.1 at a depth of 14 kilometers (about 8.7 miles). The epicenter was located 7 kilometers northwest of San José del Cabo, in the direction of the mountainous area outside the city.
Residents said they first heard a loud cracking sound, similar to thunder, followed seconds later by a sharp jolt and rumbling as the earthquake moved through the area.
In Cabo San Lucas, people also reported feeling the tremor, particularly in higher-elevation neighborhoods such as Lomas del Sol, Mesa Colorada, and Leonardo Gastélum.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of property damage or injuries in either city.
A brief statement from the General Secretariat of Los Cabos City Hall said that aftershocks may occur in the coming hours and added that Civil Protection officials are closely monitoring the situation.
