Ford Recalls 1.74 Million Vehicles in the United States Over Rearview Camera Malfunctions

The automotive manufacturer has issued a recall affecting approximately 1.74 million vehicles in the United States due to potential malfunctions involving rearview camera displays, according to reports published by and notices from the .

The issue stems from a defect in an internal component of the vehicles’ infotainment system that may cause the rearview camera image to fail to appear when drivers shift into reverse. In some cases, the system could overheat and shut down, preventing the display of the rearview image entirely. In other instances, the system may show a flipped or inverted image, potentially impairing the driver’s visibility while reversing.

According to regulatory documents, the recall affects several Ford and Lincoln models produced in recent years. The impacted vehicles include Ford Bronco models from 2021 through 2026 and Ford Edge models from 2021 through 2024. Additionally, the recall includes Ford Escape models from 2020 through 2022 and Ford Explorer models from 2020 through 2024, as well as luxury vehicles from Ford’s Lincoln division, including Lincoln Corsair (2020–2022) and Lincoln Aviator (2020–2024).

The recall covers 849,310 Ford Bronco and Edge vehicles and approximately 889,950 units of the Escape, Corsair, Aviator, and Explorer models.

Ford stated that it is not currently aware of any injuries or crashes related to the issue, though federal safety officials warned that the malfunction could increase the risk of collisions because rearview cameras are an essential safety feature designed to assist drivers when reversing.

To address the defect, Ford plans to provide software updates to the vehicles’ accessory protocol interface module, which will correct the malfunction in the camera display system. The updates may be performed at authorized dealerships or, in some cases, delivered through over-the-air software updates.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning at the end of the month. The company and federal regulators are advising affected vehicle owners to monitor recall notices and verify whether their vehicles are included by checking their vehicle identification number (VIN) through official recall databases.
