Samsung Discontinues $2,899 Galaxy Z TriFold After Limited Market Run

Samsung Electronics Co. has begun winding down sales of its Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone, a high-end experimental device priced at $2,899, after only a few months on the market. The move suggests that the product was conceived primarily as a technological showcase rather than a long-term commercial offering within the company’s mobile lineup.

According to company statements, Samsung will first halt sales in its home market of South Korea and subsequently discontinue availability in the United States once existing inventory is depleted. The device, which features a dual-hinge design that unfolds into a tablet-sized display of approximately 10 inches, has already been marked as “sold out” on Samsung’s official website.

The TriFold was introduced in late 2025 as a demonstration of Samsung’s engineering capabilities in the foldable smartphone segment. However, its high price point limited its appeal to a niche group of affluent early adopters. Additionally, the product was not widely distributed through traditional retail channels or major carriers, as it was sold primarily through Samsung’s direct-to-consumer platforms, further restricting its market reach.

While the device showcased significant advancements in multitasking and screen technology, it also faced practical challenges, including manufacturing complexity and potential durability concerns. Samsung executives have indicated that the company has not yet decided whether a successor to the TriFold will be developed, citing these technical and production hurdles.

Despite the discontinuation, some of the TriFold’s innovations—such as its expanded screen format optimized for media consumption and productivity—may influence future, more affordable foldable devices in Samsung’s portfolio.

In parallel, Samsung is continuing to advance its mainstream smartphone offerings. The company has recently introduced the Galaxy S26 Ultra, featuring enhanced privacy capabilities and new artificial intelligence-driven functionalities, signaling a strategic focus on scalable innovations with broader consumer appeal.

Overall, the brief lifecycle of the Galaxy Z TriFold underscores both the rapid pace of innovation in the smartphone industry and the challenges associated with bringing cutting-edge, high-cost technologies to a mass market.
