Vandals deface interactive mural outside La Paz stadium, sparking calls to protect public art

LA PAZ — An interactive mural painted along the walls of Arturo C. Nahl Stadium was defaced with black paint, damaging a public artwork meant to encourage creativity, community participation and pride in the city’s shared spaces.

The mural, located in one of La Paz’s most visible sports and recreation areas, had been designed as more than decoration. It was part of an effort to turn public walls into open-air cultural spaces, inviting residents and visitors to engage with art in their everyday surroundings.

Photos of the damage show black paint splashed and dripping across sections of the mural, covering parts of the artwork and leaving visible stains on a piece created to celebrate movement, youth, sports and local identity.

The vandalism has raised concern among residents and local authorities, who described the act as an attack not only on a painted wall, but on the city’s urban and cultural heritage. Public murals, they said, help bring neighborhoods to life and provide families, children and young people with spaces that inspire creativity and civic pride.

The incident has renewed calls for the community to take greater care of public spaces, report vandalism and respect the work of artists whose projects help improve the city’s appearance.

Local officials and citizens urged residents to see these murals as part of La Paz’s collective identity. Preserving them, they said, is a shared responsibility.

The damaged mural now stands as a reminder of the fragile line between public art and public neglect — and of the need to protect cultural spaces that belong to everyone.
