Telmex receives environmental permission for its undersea cable project in Mexico

Mexico's environment ministry (Sermarnat) approved telecoms company Telmex's project to build a submarine cable across the Gulf of California, linking San José del Cabo in Baja California Sur state and Mazatlán in Sinaloa state.

Telmex estimates that the investment in the project to install the 11-pair, 22-wire fiber optic cable will be US$22.5mn. The total length of the line will be 383km.

No date for the start of construction has yet been announced.

The cable, which will have an estimated lifespan of 25 years, will be connected on land with the terrestrial fiber optics systems that the company already has deployed in both cities.

The project will improve capacity between the Baja California peninsula and Mexico's Pacific coast, closing a ring in the area of influence and opening up new direct connectivity routes for regional, national and international traffic, the company said in the report submitted to Sermarnat.

Telmex described the initiative as a “high priority” for telecommunications in Mexico.

The project will take six months to complete, including preparation, construction and commissioning.
