A Caldera Under Cabo San Lucas?

A significant revelation has emerged regarding seismic activity in Cabo San Lucas. Journalist Cuauhtémoc Morgan, in his analysis of recent earthquakes, highlights a seismic swarm that has been affecting the area south of San José del Cabo since a 4.5-magnitude tremor in September. Evidence now points to geothermal activity beneath Cabo San Lucas, specifically under its most luxurious residential area.

The Diamante Connection
The activity is centered around the renowned Diamante residential and tourist development. A study commissioned by Diamante’s CEO, Ken Jowdy, and submitted to the Mexican Ministry of Energy, explored the potential for generating electricity using the region’s thermal waters. The study, titled “Exploration of Geothermal Resources,” was published on the Ministry’s transparency page on August 3, 2018.

Surprising Discoveries
This geothermal interest originated in 2007 when explorations aimed to locate water for a desalination plant. To the surprise of technicians, hot water emerged from the subsoil, followed by lava. These unexpected findings led to the suspension of further exploration. The study confirmed the presence of high-temperature water at a depth of only 32.8 feet (10 meters), raising questions about the area’s geothermal potential.

Seismic and Geological Context
The Diamante Cabo San Lucas area is reportedly intersected by two faults, as noted in the study. This information has been viewed over 250,000 times on TikTok, amplifying public interest. Morgan suggests that the ongoing earthquakes may be linked to geothermal activity and urges scientists to investigate this possibility further.

A Caldera Beneath the Surface?

One of the most intriguing aspects of this discovery is the potential existence of a caldera beneath Cabo San Lucas. However, the full scope of the caldera remains unknown due to censorship in sections of the geothermal studies conducted in the Diamante area. These gaps leave unanswered questions about the region’s geothermal landscape and its relationship to the recent seismic activity.

Call for an Updated Risk Atlas
Journalist Cuauhtémoc Morgan also calls for an urgent update to the Los Cabos Risk Atlas, which has not been modified since 2012. The lack of updated data leaves uncertainty about whether the geothermal energy beneath the Diamante development poses risks to its inhabitants.

Also Call for Scientific Investigation
Morgan’s research highlights the pressing need for scientific scrutiny. He underscores the importance of investigating the potential link between the area’s geothermal activity and its seismic disturbances.

Could this opulent tourist hotspot be concealing a significant geothermal resource beneath its surface? Comprehensive studies are essential to unravel the mysteries of this compelling and potentially transformative discovery.
