Former Los Cabos Treasurer Indicted; Ex-Mayor Oscar Leggs Awaits Decision in Corruption Case

SAN JOSE DEL CABO — After a lengthy seven-hour hearing on Monday, José Martín Talamantes, the former municipal treasurer of Los Cabos, was legally indicted, according to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office of Baja California Sur. To the prejudice of the Municipality of Los Cabos, the judge overseeing the case decided there was enough evidence to bring charges against him for abusing his position of authority through equalization.

The complaint relates to what happened on October 18, 2022, when Talamantes, in his capacity as municipal treasurer, entered into an agreement with a financial intermediation firm in order to obtain a short-term loan for the municipality that was close to 400 million pesos in value. The corporation received a payment of 14.17 million pesos even though it did not fulfill any financial obligations.

Other Legal Advancements
Oscar Leggs Castro, the previous mayor, has also been implicated in the probe. At a hearing on Saturday, January 18, 2025, his legal status will be discussed, and it is anticipated that he will be charged with a crime.

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office reiterated its dedication to investigating corruption cases, particularly those involving people who are protected by constitutional immunity, and to holding public officials accountable. The agency stressed the value of public participation and encouraged people to use the anonymous reporting tools on its official website to expose wrongdoing.

José Martín Talamantes is deemed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, as required by law.
