Los Cabos and Panama Open Doors to Culture and Tourism

  • Local leaders see opportunity to boost trade, culture, and economic ties

Los Cabos, Mexico — Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez welcomed Panama’s Ambassador to Mexico, Abraham Martínez Montilla, on Wednesday in a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and exploring new opportunities for collaboration between the two regions.

The meeting, attended by members of the City Council and key municipal officials, focused on a range of shared priorities. At the top of the agenda was the launch of the new direct flight connecting Los Cabos and Panama, with its inaugural arrival scheduled for Thursday, December 4, at 12:30 p.m. Officials also discussed potential cooperation in economic development, tourism, cultural exchange and long-term regional planning.

Mayor Agúndez expressed the municipality’s full commitment to building a strategic partnership with Panama, noting that the upcoming air route could become a gateway for stronger commercial and tourism exchanges.

“Commercial and tourism exchange will bring valuable opportunities to both cities,” Agúndez said. “We’re convinced that a sister-city relationship can foster even closer ties. Los Cabos is already on the world’s radar, and these international bridges must continue to grow.”

Ambassador Martínez praised the municipal government’s openness to collaboration and highlighted the significance of the new direct route, operated by Copa Airlines, saying it could become a powerful driver for investment and visitor traffic.

“Imagining a direct air connection between Panama and Los Cabos — two destinations with major global projection — is extremely promising,” Martínez said. “There are clear logistical conditions for great things to happen.”

At the close of their meeting, both officials exchanged gifts as a gesture of goodwill and confirmed the next steps in their joint work agenda.

The official welcome ceremony for the inaugural Panama–Los Cabos flight will take place Thursday, followed by an afternoon cultural tour at Teniente José Antonio Mijares Plaza, where the local program “Origins of Los Cabos” will be presented.

The bilateral activities will continue Friday, December 5, with visits to rural communities in the northern part of the municipality, featuring livestock exhibitions and regional product displays as part of the cultural, tourism and economic exchange.
