105-Kilometer Route From the Gulf to the Pacific
LA PAZ, Mexico — The coastal city of La Paz is gearing up to host one of Mexico’s premier trail-running events as athletes from around the world arrive to take on the “Mar a Mar” (Sea to Sea) ultramarathon from December 4–7.
The race will send 1,100 runners from at least 10 countries across the spine of the Baja California peninsula — starting in the beach town of Los Barriles on the Sea of Cortez and finishing in the Pacific resort village of Todos Santos. The rugged 105-kilometer (about 65-mile) course climbs more than 6,500 feet through the Sierra La Laguna Biosphere Reserve, including two nights of wilderness camping along the way.
City tourism director Natalia Ruffo Castaño said participants will be split into two waves — the Sierra Group (Dec. 4–6) and the Mar Group (Dec. 5–7) — to improve logistics and ensure a smooth experience on the remote route. Camps will be set up in the secluded areas of San Dionisio and Rancho La Rueda.
Ruffo praised the event as a model of responsible tourism, noting that it blends outdoor adventure with environmental stewardship and direct economic benefits for nearby rural communities.
“It’s an exemplary product — it showcases our destination while respecting natural resources and supporting local families,” she said.
Organizers say runners will get a rare, immersive look at dramatic desert-mountain scenery as they move from the warm waters of the Gulf of California to the crashing surf of the Pacific — a true sea-to-sea journey across Baja Sur.
