Former La Paz Mayor Rubén Muñoz Slams Current Mayor Milena Quiroga Outside Criminal Court

La Paz, Baja California Sur — Former La Paz mayor and former federal lawmaker Rubén Muñoz Álvarez sharply criticized current Mayor Milena Quiroga Romero after speaking with reporters outside the Criminal Justice Center in La Paz, where a legal case connected to decisions made during his administration is under review.

Muñoz Álvarez accused the current municipal government of acting with political disloyalty and questionable judgment after Quiroga’s administration filed a criminal complaint linked to actions taken during his tenure as mayor.

Standing outside the courthouse following the proceedings, the former mayor argued that the accusations represent a betrayal from someone whose early political career, he said, he helped launch.

I was the one who invited her into politics. I proposed her as a candidate for state congress and supported her campaign,” Muñoz Álvarez told reporters, referring to Quiroga’s early rise within the political ranks of the ruling Morena party.

He also said his political backing helped Quiroga advance within the state legislature, where she later served in a leadership role.

Former Mayor Questions Motives Behind Investigation

During the interview outside the courthouse, Muñoz Álvarez took direct aim at the current administration’s decision to pursue legal action against him, framing the case as a political move rather than a legitimate criminal matter.

There’s a deeper issue here about values. Someone who bites the hand that fed them cannot represent a trustworthy option for any social group,” the former mayor said, delivering one of his strongest criticisms of the current mayor.

The public exchange highlights a widening political rift between two prominent members of the same party in Baja California Sur, where internal divisions within Morena have increasingly spilled into the public arena.

Muñoz Defends Decisions Made by City Council

Addressing the criminal complaint filed by the municipal government, Muñoz Álvarez downplayed the seriousness of the accusations and insisted that the case stems from actions intended to promote economic development in La Paz.

The former mayor rejected claims that he made unilateral decisions while in office, emphasizing that the actions under scrutiny were approved collectively by the La Paz City Council.

According to Muñoz Álvarez, the council authorized the Urban Development Department to evaluate whether a private company could be granted a land-use designation for a proposed project, provided the developer met all required legal and regulatory standards.

Now it turns out that promoting development to help provide land opportunities for residents is being treated as a criminal offense,” Muñoz Álvarez said.

Case Continues as Political Tensions Grow

The dispute underscores growing tensions within Morena in Baja California Sur, particularly in the state capital, where both Muñoz and Quiroga have been influential political figures in recent years.

While the legal process continues, Muñoz Álvarez maintained that he will defend his actions in court and expressed skepticism about the motives behind the accusations.

That’s something they will have to answer for themselves and their conscience,” he said before leaving the courthouse.

The case remains under review at the Criminal Justice Center in La Paz, where authorities are expected to determine the next steps in the proceedings.
