According to information released by the U.S. Department of Justice, the defendant, Mittel Patel, a citizen of the United Kingdom, was convicted for his role in an international scheme involving both narcotics trafficking and the illegal supply of military-grade weapons intended to support cartel operations.
Plot to Import Hundreds of Kilograms of Cocaine
Federal investigators determined that Patel participated in negotiations to import approximately 400 kilograms of cocaine into the United States, a shipment linked to the operations of the Sinaloa Cartel.
As part of the conspiracy, Patel also agreed to provide an arsenal of high-powered weapons to strengthen the cartel’s operational capabilities. The weapons discussed during the negotiations included:
- machine guns
- assault rifles
- sniper rifles
- rocket-propelled grenade launchers (RPGs)
Prosecutors stated that these weapons were intended to protect cocaine shipments during their transportation from Mexico into the United States, reinforcing the cartel’s armed structure and ability to move narcotics across borders.
DEA Undercover Operation
The case originated from a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) undercover investigation. Federal agents posing as intermediaries for drug traffickers established contact with Patel and engaged him in negotiations involving both weapons sales and narcotics transportation.
During the course of the conspiracy, Patel sent weapon components to the United States, including parts for an AR-15 style rifle and a sniper rifle equipped with a scope, as an initial step in the illegal transaction.
Major Blow to International Criminal Networks
U.S. authorities emphasized that the case highlights the close link between international drug trafficking and illegal arms dealing, activities that strengthen powerful criminal organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel.
Law enforcement agencies were able to disrupt the operation before the planned cocaine shipments and weapons deliveries could be fully carried out.
Officials from the Department of Justice noted that the sentence sends a clear message that the United States will continue aggressively targeting individuals and networks that attempt to supply weapons and logistical support to major drug cartels operating across international borders.
