Authorities in Los Cabos have ordered a temporary shutdown of operations at Puerto Paraíso shopping plaza in Cabo San Lucas, citing safety risks that officials say could endanger both residents and tourists.
The decision follows a series of alerts and partial closures in recent days, as local officials moved to contain potential hazards while inspections were underway. City leaders said the shutdown is a precautionary measure until safety conditions can be fully verified.
The action came after a technical inspection conducted by Civil Protection officials and the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department, led by municipal Secretary Alberto Rentería Santana. According to officials, the review uncovered structural deficiencies and gaps in the building’s emergency response protocols.
“To avoid putting the public and the thousands of visitors in this area at risk, we are suspending operations at the plaza,” Rentería Santana said. “Prevention must come first in any situation.”
Fire Chief Juan Antonio Carbajal Figueroa said the facility’s fire suppression system is currently not operational. He also noted that at least six incidents have been reported at the site so far this month, raising concerns about ongoing safety conditions for workers and visitors.
Authorities confirmed the closure after determining the property was not in compliance with required safety regulations.
Officials emphasized that no fines or administrative penalties will be imposed at this stage. Instead, business owners and tenants will be offered guidance and informational sessions aimed at helping them meet safety standards.
The plaza will remain closed until all required safety measures are fully implemented and its emergency systems are properly certified, authorities said, adding that reopening will depend on meeting those conditions.
