INE announces Claudia Sheinbaum Set to Become Mexico’s First Female President, PREP Shows Lead

Claudia Sheinbaum, representing Morena, PT, and PVEM, is poised to become Mexico's first female president, according to preliminary results from INE’s quick count.

With a significant lead, Sheinbaum has secured over 30 points ahead of her nearest rival in the presidential race. During a speech at Plaza de la Constitución, she acknowledged the historical significance of her victory.

Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum on Sunday became the first woman elected president of Mexico.

Sheinbaum, a scientist who is a member of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s leftist Morena party, defeated Xóchitl Gálvez of the opposition National Action Party and Jorge Álvarez Máynez of the Citizens’ Movement. She will also be Mexico’s first Jewish president.

She extended gratitude towards her opponents, Xóchil Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, for accepting her electoral success.

The INE’s quick count is an early indicator, not the final result, setting a profound precedent for future electoral processes in Mexico.
