In Fullerton, a Tesla on Autopilot collides with a police patrol car

In a deadly collision in Fullerton, a patrol car conducting traffic controls collided with a Tesla operating in self-driving mode, according to authorities on Thursday.

The incident happened at the intersection of Orangethorpe and Courtney avenues after midnight, while an officer from the Fullerton Police Department was evaluating the previous crash involving a DUI driver.

According to investigators, the Tesla crashed into the patrol car, which was parked horizontally to obstruct traffic, as the patrol officer was directing traffic at the crossing. The cop escaped injury when he promptly leaped out of the path of the collision.

The officer can be seen fleeing on bodycam footage in order to avoid getting struck by the Tesla. A nearby house's security camera also recorded the crash.

The Tesla driver admitted to being on his cell phone and having his car in Autopilot mode.
