Minerva Pérez Was Assassinated; Illegal Fishing and Extortion Are Under Investigation

 


Castro was attacked after 19:00 local time on July 8, as she left her company Atenea en el Mar in Mexico's in Ensenada, the Dallas News reported. More than 30 bullets were fired into her car, according to local media reports.

Canainpesca's national president, Miller Alexander Longoria, described the attack as an “execution."

Julio Berdegue Sacristan, Mexico's secretary of agriculture and rural development, condemned the killing in a post on social media.

Castro previously denounced issues of extortion, illegal fishing and threats affecting workers in the industry both in the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean. Hours before her death she criticized illegal fishing in a TV interview.

TV footage from Imagens Noticias posted on Youtube showed numerous bullet holes in the windscreen of Castro's white SUV vehicle.

Her death is under investigation.
